At least 16 people were killed and 28 injured in a South Sinai bus crash on Wednesday, 2 September, according to Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population.
The passenger bus overturned on the road linking Dahab and Nuweiba on the eastern coast of the Sinai Peninsula. The ministry said 20 ambulances were sent to the scene and the injured were transferred to hospitals for treatment.
The official statement provided an initial casualty toll. Authorities had not released the identities or nationalities of those killed and injured by late Wednesday morning, while the precise cause of the crash had not been formally established.
Emergency response to South Sinai bus crash
Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar directed medical facilities to raise their readiness and ensure that medicines, supplies and specialist care were available for the injured, according to reporting citing the ministry.
Reuters independently reported the ministry’s figures of 16 deaths and 28 injuries. AFP also carried the same toll and said the crash occurred between Dahab and Nuweiba, two destinations popular with tourists and divers.
Some local reporting said speed may have contributed to the bus overturning, but this had not been confirmed by investigators. The casualty count should also be treated as preliminary while emergency and identification work continues.
Road-safety concerns in Egypt
Egypt has recorded repeated mass-casualty road crashes. Official statistics cited by international reporting show that thousands of people die on the country’s roads each year, despite sustained investment in highways and transport infrastructure.
The latest crash follows another serious collision in Ismailia governorate in August that killed 15 people and injured 32, according to Reuters.
