Shoprite buys Vida e Caffè as annual earnings rise 12.2%

Shoprite has acquired coffee chain Vida e Caffè and expanded its financial-services reach through R&A Cellular, as South Africa’s largest retailer reported stronger annual earnings.

The Shoprite Vida e Caffè acquisition was announced with the group’s results for the 52 weeks ended 28 June 2026. Shoprite said group revenue increased 7.1% to R274.8 billion, while Reuters reported that diluted headline earnings per share from continuing operations rose 12.2% to R15.27.

The combination of stronger earnings and two strategic acquisitions points to a broader shift beyond traditional supermarket retailing. Shoprite is moving further into quick-service coffee, digital payments and services delivered through informal traders.

What the Shoprite Vida e Caffè deal includes

Shoprite has agreed to buy 100% of Vida e Caffè’s South African and international operations. The coffee business has about 400 corporate and franchised outlets across a range of formats, including shopping centres, forecourts, offices and drive-through locations.

The transaction was signed on 20 August and remains subject to regulatory conditions, according to Shoprite’s results announcement. The retailer said the acquisition would strengthen its presence in the quick-service restaurant market and complement its existing food-service activities.

Shoprite also acquired a 51% interest in R&A Cellular, a South African technology and payments company whose point-of-sale devices serve informal and semi-formal retailers. The platform enables merchants to offer everyday digital and financial services, giving Shoprite another route into township and rural markets.

Low price inflation supports customer growth

Reuters reported that Shoprite’s South African supermarket sales rose 7.1% to R228.7 billion. The group said its internal selling-price inflation was only 0.8%, below national food inflation of 3.9%, while 11,500 products were sold at lower prices.

That pricing strategy helped support volume and customer growth during a period of continued pressure on household budgets. It also strengthened Shoprite’s market position across its value-focused supermarket brands and the more premium Checkers business.

The acquisitions still require careful integration. Vida operates a distinct consumer brand and franchise network, while R&A Cellular serves smaller merchants whose needs differ from those of formal supermarkets. Shoprite’s challenge will be to expand both businesses without weakening their existing relationships or customer appeal.
