Media Briefing by NATJOINTS Chairpersons: Updates on BRICS Security State of Readiness

The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS), led by the South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF), and State Security Agency (SSA), is set to secure the upcoming BRICS Summit, scheduled from August 22nd to August 24th, 2023.

This second hosting of the BRICS Summit on South African soil is anticipated to proceed smoothly, with the NATJOINTS confirming their satisfaction with security plans.

Comprising representatives from various government departments, a priority committee has overseen meticulous planning, encompassing transport, routes, venues, and security.

With only four days remaining until the event, the NATJOINTS assures the nation of their readiness to welcome international leaders while maintaining safety and security.

Key pillars include intelligence coordination, proactive law enforcement, a combat approach involving specialized units and the SANDF if necessary, reactive measures for case management, and communication to keep residents and visitors informed.

Police visibility will increase around the conference center, bolstered by cooperative efforts between law enforcement agencies.

The public is urged to cooperate and act within the law, as stringent security measures will be enforced, and only accredited individuals will be permitted near the venue. The airspace around the conference venue will be restricted, and drones are strictly prohibited.

Road closures around the Sandton Convention Centre and Gallagher Estate will be in place during the event. South Africans are encouraged to welcome international guests in the spirit of Ubuntu.

NATJOINTS is confident in its state of readiness and committed to ensuring a secure and successful event.”
