Sixth straight night of Russian strikes kills 12 in Kyiv region
Russia launched another large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight, extending an unprecedented six-night sequence of strikes on Kyiv and killing at least 12 people, according to Ukrainian authorities.
The sixth night of Russian strikes on Kyiv hit residential and railway infrastructure in the capital and surrounding region early on Tuesday, 1 September 2026. Reuters and the Associated Press independently reported the death toll, while rescue and damage assessments continued.
AP reported that three children and an Indian national were among those killed. Ukrainian Railways said six of its employees died when railway facilities were struck. The casualty details originate from Ukrainian officials and could be revised as emergency teams complete searches.
Sixth night of Russian strikes targets Kyiv and transport links
Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 218 drones as well as cruise and ballistic missiles. It reported intercepting 187 drones, but said strikes were recorded at multiple locations. These figures could not be independently verified in full.
The six consecutive nights represent the longest sustained sequence of attacks on the Ukrainian capital since Russia began its full-scale invasion in February 2022, according to AP.
Damage was also reported in the southern Odesa region, where an export facility and the Orlivka border crossing with Romania were hit. Processing at the crossing was suspended. Ukraine’s ports and Danube transport routes are central to grain and other exports, giving attacks on this infrastructure potential consequences beyond the immediate battlefield.
Russia said its forces targeted military infrastructure. No independent evidence was available to establish the intended targets of every strike, while confirmed damage included civilian and transport sites.
Air-defence pressure and wider implications
The attack comes as Ukraine warns that its supply of Patriot interceptors, used against ballistic missiles, is under growing pressure. Kyiv has called for additional air-defence support and stronger economic measures against Moscow.
Ukraine also continued attacks on sites inside Russia. Russian authorities said hundreds of Ukrainian drones were intercepted across several regions, while a fire was reported at the Ust-Luga oil export port. Those operational claims also remain difficult to verify independently.
The sustained attacks increase risks to civilians, rail operations and Ukraine’s export capacity at a time when diplomatic efforts remain stalled. They also highlight the conflict’s widening economic impact: damage to Black Sea and Danube routes can disrupt agricultural shipments and place additional strain on alternative rail connections.
There was no verified indication on Tuesday afternoon that the latest attacks had produced a new ceasefire initiative. The immediate priorities remained rescue work, restoring transport and power services, and assessing whether the casualty count would rise.
