‘Go to work’: Bongi Mbonambi issues warning to All Blacks fans

Springbok Bongi Mbonambi has playfully teased supporters of the All Blacks, insisting that they are undeserving of a public holiday on 15 December.

The rugby player issued the “warning” on his Instagram post.

Friday marks a day off for many South Africans to celebrate the Boks’s second consecutive World Cup win. The announcement was made by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his national address in October.

SPRINGBOK BONGI MBONAMBI’S PLAYFUL PUBLIC HOLIDAY WARNING

On Instagram, Bongi Mbonambi – who is currently nursing an injury – reminded South Africans of their deserved long weekend.

He posted alongside a pic of the Springboks squad: “Enjoy this day, Mzansi. It’s for you.

Mbonambi – who made headlines over a misconstrued comment heard by England’s Tom Curry – added: “But the New Zealand ones in Cape Town must go to work.”

He jokingly added: “Kom ons lag saam [Let’s laugh together].”

WHY 15 DECEMBER?

The president’s public holiday promise was made during a national address on Monday, 30 October.

In it, Ramaphosa touched on many notable sporting victories in South Africa.

They included the country’s participation in the recent Fifa Women’s World Cup, Netball World Cup, and even Cricket World Cup, which is currently ongoing.
