The 43rd Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government was held on August 17th, 2023, in Luanda, Angola. Here are the highlights:
- Angola’s President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço was elected as SADC Chairperson, with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa as the Incoming Chairperson.
- Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema became Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, succeeded by Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
- SADC extended the Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) by twelve months, acknowledging progress in securing Cabo Delgado.
- The SADC Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC) was endorsed to restore peace in the eastern DRC.
- The Summit emphasized coordination in peace efforts for the eastern DRC and recognized AU Champion João Lourenço’s role.
- Member States’ readiness for upcoming elections was acknowledged, emphasizing peaceful processes.
- Progress was noted in implementing the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan 2020-2030, focusing on economic growth and development.
- The theme for the 43rd SADC Summit was endorsed: “Human and Financial Capital: The Key Drivers for Sustainable Industrialisation in the SADC Region.”
- The Regional Gas Master Plan, 2023-2038, was approved to harness natural gas resources.
- The SADC Declaration on Accelerating Action to End HIV and AIDS by 2030 was signed, along with the SADC Protocol on Employment and Labour.
- Dr. Judith Kateera from Zimbabwe was appointed SADC Deputy Executive Secretary for Corporate Affairs.
- Angola’s successful hosting of the summit was acknowledged.
