India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveils a $270bn stimulus package to boost the country’s battered economy after a weeks-long lockdown to curb the coronavirus pandemic. 

The United States reports a record $738bn budget deficit last month caused by a surge in government spending and low revenues amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the US’s top infectious disease expert, warns Congress if the country reopens too soon it will result in “needless suffering and death”.

More than 80,000 people are now known to have died in the United States from COVID-19, according to Johns Hopkins University. Globally, more than 288,000 have died.
